The aim of this book is to bring about an awareness and understanding of The Shadow Lines to the university undergraduates and its systematic study for the assessment purpose. Keeping the free spirit and delight of literature in mind, I have avoided narrow and constrained approach in my observations and annotations. My painstaking efforts have only been able to open a window to this legendary work of Ghosh. His industry and sweat run through the lines and pages of the novel. My endeavor has been to bring the authentic interpretation of the text. However, at times The Shadow Lines becomes subjective in meaning and understanding. It is also silent about a few things which take place in the course of the novel that assume great significance, leaving it open to the readers to surmise. In those respects my work becomes only suggestive. A chapter on select university questions with answers is provided to guide the students in arranging and presenting critical material in the form required by the questions set in the examinations. That the leaflets in compiled form are read and understood with sustained interest and find the appreciation of the reader is my earnest hope
