As the story advances, Patrick becomes aware of the devious plans of Benny Aricia, who is a shipbuilding magnate. Benny plans of swindling the U.S. government and the firm stands to gain a whopping thirty million dollars from this. Patrick then comes to know that he stands to gain nothing from this scheme. What follows is a clever scheme by Patrick himself as he tries to gain his share of the money. Patrick fakes his own death, as a result of which his wife receives a hefty amount in life insurance. The facts that she has been an adulterous woman and has a daughter from an extramarital relationship are revealed to the readers. The action continues as the law firm suddenly discovers ninety million dollars missing from their account. This causes them to doubt Patrick’s death in the first place as they know that only an insider could swindle them successfully. As a result of this, they hunt down Patrick, who is now living in Brazil with his girlfriend, Eva. Even though Patrick is captured and tortured for information, the FBI agents track him down after gaining information from Eva and end up saving his life from certain death. A number of twists and turns follow, which include Patrick landing himself in a great deal of trouble after being sued for murder, divorce, and theft.
