The book is mainly the outcome of a Ph.D. research. This dissertation on "Medical Waste Management in Bangladesh : Policy and Practices". The main features shown in the book are the variation of different variables used for the comparison among different category health-care institutions; between government and non-government hospitals, socio-economic impact of medical wastes among the people around the hospitals and waste disposal areas, situation analysis of different category hospitals in Bangladesh using different indicators, the problems of waste management categorically in government and non-government hospitals etc. Medical Waste Management in Bangladesh: Policy and Practices includes assessment of current waste management practices in Bangladesh, public health and environmental impact assessment of such wastes, legislations, rules, regulations and policies of different developed and developing countries regarding medical waste management with an emphasis on the South-East Asian countries. It also describes various treatment technologies identifying the technologies available in Bangladesh, private sector involvement in medical waste management, infective organism isolation and identification by floor swabbing, areal exposure and infectious medical solid waste lab-culture and drug resistance test. The book has been designed for the health professionals as well as the victims affected directly or indirectly from such health hazards.

Dr. Aruna Biswas was born in Narail in 1961. She works in the Government system as a member of Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration) cadre holding the post of Joint Secretary. She served in different disciplines in government and semi-government sectors. Among them, she served the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Education for quite a good period. She obtained her Masters in Zoology from Rajshahi University and another Masters on Environmental Science and Technology from Netherlands. She received Diploma in Software Applications from City & Guilds, U.K. and completed Ph.D. on “Medical Waste Management in Bangladesh: Policy and Practices” from India under the supervision of Dr. S.C. Santra, Professor Dept. of Environmental Science, University of Kalyani, West Bengal. Alongside her official work, she works with Bangladesh Scouts, the scout movement of Bangladesh with one million scout population as a senior leader.
